A Dechlorinating Shower Filter Does Not Provide the Protection You Need

!±8± A Dechlorinating Shower Filter Does Not Provide the Protection You Need

You should only buy a dechlorinating shower filter that also removes THMs, chlorination byproducts. Most of them do not.

They came on the market initially as a cosmetic aid. Beauty experts advised their clients about the affects of chlorine on the hair and skin. Before showerhead systems came on the market, models often washed their hair in bottled water. If they are staying in a hotel, many of them still do.

Yes, chlorine dries out the hair and skin. The vapors irritate the eyes and respiratory system. They even trigger asthma attacks. But, the biggest long-term health risk is from THM exposure, chlorination byproducts.

The average dechlorinating shower filter does nothing to protect you from THMs. There are only two or three products on the market that do. One is very affordable, costing less than . Another is very expensive, costing over 0. Since they have the same effectiveness, I would choose the less expensive brand.

What is the long-term health risk of THM exposure? According to studies conducted in 2007, exposure to THMs in homes with chlorinated water doubles a person's chances of developing bladder cancer. Exposure occurs in a variety of ways.

In the shower, they become gases and are inhaled. In the kitchen, when you are washing dishes by hand, the gases are again inhaled. When cooking with unfiltered water, they are again released. When you drink a glass of unfiltered water, you are ingesting them. They are present in many bottled beverages, as well.

In a bath or shower, the chemicals are absorbed through your skin, as they are if you swim in a chlorinated pool. If you live in the US, the level deemed safe by the EPA did not consider multiple areas of exposure. They were based on the assumption that your only source of exposure was through drinking and that you weighed 175 pounds.

As you can see, a dechlorinating shower filter is not the only thing that you need. You need an effective filter on your kitchen type. Just to let you know, Brita and PUR devices do NOT remove THMs or VOCs, another health hazard that exists in publicly treated supplies.

In order to make it easier for you, many companies provide product performance data, certifications from Underwriter's Laboratory and certificates from the California Department of Health. If a company does not have those certifications or provide complete performance data before you buy, then you are probably getting a dechlorinating shower filter, but you are not getting full protection.

I believe, as do many health experts, that we can reduce the incidence of cancer in our lifetime, just by taking simple steps to limit our exposure to known carcinogens. You don't smoke. You might eat organic food. Those are good steps to take, but limiting your exposure to THM is an excellent step, as well.

So, install a dechlorinating shower filter, with certified THM reduction, and a similar kitchen system and start protecting your long-term health. Your family needs you to stay healthy.

Is Clean & Pure Countertop Water Filter Really So Clean and Pure?

!±8± Is Clean & Pure Countertop Water Filter Really So Clean and Pure?

If you purchase a Clean & Pure countertop water filter, you expect certain things. First, since it is advertised as a maintenance free countertop water filter, you expect that the system will consistently remove contaminants for a reasonable length of time. Many people who have purchased the units were disappointed.

A maintenance free countertop water filter is a great idea for people who are busy and have little time for a lot of extra things. At a cost of it seems to be a great value. But of course everything that seems good usually has a downside.

According to consumer reviews, the clean & pure countertop water filter is prone to leakage. One customer said that the system didn't purify anything because it leaked all the water out. Another said that he contacted the company to find out what contaminants were removed. The company was forthcoming enough, in that they stated that it was not actually a water purifier. It is only designed to remove chlorine and odor.

I worry about the customers that say the maintenance free countertop water filter was the best thing they have ever purchased. It is easy to believe that since the taste is better and the odor is removed, you are completely safe. But, there are many things that can come out of the tap that can neither be smelled nor tasted. And, many of them can be deadly.

The owner can choose to purchase a better-grade pore structure cartridge at a higher price, supposedly to remove more contaminants, but the model that is sold on the Home Shopping Network does not come with that option. The name makes you think that you are getting a great product for a great deal, but the facts are somewhat different.

The Clean & Pure countertop water filter is advertised as a maintenance free countertop water filter, but it will have to be changed when it is worn out. It is said to be good for 15,000 gallons, but some customer reviews indicate otherwise.

In order to get a truly clean & pure countertop water filter, three important things should be included. First, it should be able to carry-out mechanical filtration. This process absorbs contaminants, when water passes over and moistens the fibers.

Second, whether it is a maintenance free countertop water filter or not, it should be able to perform electro kinetic absorption. This means contaminated particles produce an electrical field that can be identified and removed by the system.

Third, anything that is truly a clean & pure countertop water filter should be able to function as the site of physical absorption. Meaning when the water passes over a solid absorbent and particles will stick to the surface of the absorbent.

Carbon blocks are used in the better systems to accomplish that task. The best choice may not be a maintenance free countertop water filter, but one in which the filtration cartridges need only be replaced every three months or so.

The really low price tag on the Clean & Pure countertop water filter should be an indication that some of the technology has not been included. Don't be one of the many who are dissatisfied. Now that you know some of the most important features, find one that will truly meet your needs.

Drink Clean, Filtered Water - On Tap Kitchen Water Filter Systems

!±8± Drink Clean, Filtered Water - On Tap Kitchen Water Filter Systems

What's in your city water? Do you really know? You may be asking yourself if you really need a water filter. If you are satisfied with the taste and smell of your present top water, you might be happy to drink the water right out of the tap. But even if taste and odor are fine, you may wonder what's in the water you're drinking. In this case, you want to look at some of the least expensive type of water filtration available; on-tap water filters that attach to your faucet. These are point of use water filters because they are used at the faucet, versus those that are plumbed into the main water line. These on-tap water filters use the very popular Activated Carbon filtration method.

Here's a brief explanation of three different types of water filtration methods available to a home owner:

1. Activated Carbon; this is and extremely popular and effective type of water filter. This type of filter will remove organic contaminants; organic contaminants include chemicals which are most often responsible for taste or odor problems in your water. What happens when water passes through this filter is that the carbon particles will attract and remove these contaminants, which may include items such as lead, mercury, copper, hydrogen sulfide and chlorine. There's two types of Activated Carbon filters available today:

a) solid block activated carbon filters contain activated carbon particles that are compressed into dense material which the water has to travel through.

b) granular activated carbon filters contain, as the title suggests, granules of activated carbon which your water has to pass through.

2. A particle filter uses a membrane to screen out particles based on their size. The filters are rated according to the number of microns that the pore size is in the membrane. The smaller the micron number, the cleaner filter your water will be. There's two types of materials that these filters will use:

a) a ceramic filter will be fine to screen out bacteria and parasites and other small particles. However, this filter will not disinfect water.

b) a fiber filter will have larger pores that will stop the dirt but will allow contaminants that are dissolved to pass through.

3. A resin filter has a filter cartridge that is made up of resin's and will remove contaminants such as heavy metals which includes lead, as well as minerals that can cause deposits in coffee makers and kettles. Some people will combine a resin filter with an activated carbon filter which will be a very effective filtering system to remove particles and dissolve substances.

One thing all on-tap water filters have in common: it's important to remember to switch the valve on your kitchen tap water filter to bypass the filter when using hot water. Hot water may damage some of the filters components.

Some of the more popular on-tap water filter manufacturers are Brita, Pur, Culligan, Waterpik, Instapure, CrystaPure, Crystal Quest, and GE. Prices range from around and upwards.

OK, So What's Up With Pure Water Filters?

!±8± OK, So What's Up With Pure Water Filters?

Just because they are advertised as pure water filters doesn't mean that they actually provide purity. You can only find an effective pure water filter, if you know what to look for. Here's a little shopping help.

For families on a municipal water treatment system, there are a number of hazardous impurities that should be removed before drinking, cooking or showering. These include cysts, lead, chlorine and Trihalomethanes (THMs).

Many so-called pure water filters only remove chlorine and odor. Most do not remove THMs. It all depends on the technology that the water filtration manufacturer chooses to include, but a high price does not always indicate high quality.

A reverse osmosis pure water filter, for example, removes cysts, but not chlorine or THMs and they only reduce lead to the federal action level. If you are serviced by a public provider, the facility must advise you when levels exceed the federal action level.

But, in truth, no level of lead consumption is safe. You should look for a pure water filter that includes an ion exchange step to remove at least 99% of all lead traces.

Pure water filters that remove chlorine may include granular activated carbon, a carbon block or both. The dual-stage systems reduce chlorine by more than 99%. If a system only includes granular activated carbon, they can "leak" bits of the granules into your glass.

With the best dual stage systems, the last step is a carbon and multi-media block with a .5 micron channel to capture any cysts, sediments or bits of carbon. The carbon and multi-media block design will also trap THMs.

THMs or trihalomethanes are always found in public supplies when chemical disinfectants have been used to kill bacteria and control algae growth. There is a maximum action level for them, as well, but there is no consideration of how quickly the levels can rise as chlorine remains active and continues to encounter bacteria and algae in the pipes.

By the time the water gets to your home, the level could be astronomically higher than it was at the facility. Trihalomethanes are a major concern because they are toxic to the nervous system and increase a person's risk of cancer. There are thousands of new cases every year that are directly caused by THM exposure.

The Ever Pure water filter does not remove THMs. Neither does Brita or PUR. I am not sure how they can continue to call them pure water filters when they do not reduce the risk of THM exposure, but they get away with it.

You should be aware that THM exposure can occur during a shower or bath, because the compounds become vaporized and are inhaled. They can also be absorbed through the skin. So, you really need a pure water filter for the kitchen and the shower.

You can expect to pay about 5 for the best pure water filters. My favorite company offers a package deal that includes both kitchen and shower filtration for around 0. You can't find a better deal for an effective product anywhere on the market. Happy shopping!

The Most Effective Tap Water Purifier For Your Money

!±8± The Most Effective Tap Water Purifier For Your Money

Don't buy just any tap water filter that you see on a shelf in a department store. You want a "real" tap water purifier and some of the most popular brands do not really purify. Here's how to tell the difference.

First of all, a company should provide product performance data. They should make it available "before" you buy, so that you know what you are getting. The problem is that most companies do not make the information readily available.

To find out what contaminants were removed by the "Clean & Pure" "maintenance-free" tap water filter, I had to call the company. After being transferred numerous times and spending what seemed like hours on hold, I was informed that the product is NOT a tap water purifier. It only reduces chlorine and odor.

Companies like this, along with PUR and Brita, use a single stage granular activated carbon step to reduce chlorine and some of the other common chemical contaminants. While chlorine removal is important, since it damages the digestive system, there are other more hazardous chemicals in publicly treated supplies.

Some of the worst are trihalomethanes or THMs. They are byproducts of chemical disinfection. They are present in every publicly treated supply. Sometimes the levels are high. Sometimes they're low. But, without a doubt, they are always there.

A tap water purifier must include a multi-media adsorptive block to adequately remove THMs. The cheap brands mentioned above do not include this step. But, you don't have to spend a fortune on reverse osmosis, either.

Reverse osmosis was the tap water filter of choice for many years. But, technology has moved on and this step is simply unnecessary for a publicly treated water supply. At one time they were recommended for cyst removal. In case you don't know, cysts are tiny parasites that are resistant to public disinfection methods. An infection can be fatal.

They can only be removed by a reverse osmosis tap water purifier or a submicron particle filter. Submicron particle filters cost a lot less and are just as effective. The best systems take that adsorptive block that I mentioned above and create a submicron sized channel, which ensures that ALL of the water passing through is cleaned of chemical contaminants, and it guarantees the removal of giardia and cryptosporidium cysts.

To remove lead and other metallic traces, a tap water filter should include an ion exchange step. This step improves the mineral content and the taste, as well as the pH level of water passing by it. All together, an effective tap water purifier should include four steps; granular carbon, a carbon and multi-media block, a submicron filter and an ion exchange step.

That might sound like a lot and you might think it would be expensive, but surprisingly, the best systems cost about a hundred dollars, if you buy them direct from the manufacturer.

Look for these steps and for certifications by Underwriter's Laboratory and the California Department of Health. That way, you'll be sure that you are buying an effective tap water filter and not just wasting your money.

5 Gallon Water Dispenser - Pros and Cons

!±8± 5 Gallon Water Dispenser - Pros and Cons

The use of bottled water around the globe has been rapidly increasing in recent years. With the belief that drinking bottled water is better for your health, many spend money on installing a 5 gallon water dispenser in their homes or offices. Before you decide whether or not you should do the same, make sure you are aware of the many factors involved in the making and use of water bottles, and the water contained.

The Pros of using bottle water dispensers are fairly obvious, but let's take a more detailed look:

You are given the choice of which water brand to use since most of them today provide the 5 gallon standard bottles and home delivery services. Freedom in placing the dispenser anywhere you want, like tables, desks, room corners, in between furniture. No dealing with problems in public water supply systems, such as rust, shear, corrosion, cracks, leaks and so on. Independent source of water in the cases when a water regime or malfunction is present in your area, such as shortage of water supply, lack of pressure or clogged main pipes. Easy to replace or upgrade a dispenser without doing tedious installation work and dealing with water supply systems, pipes, wrenches and drilling holes.

The Cons have mainly to do with the safety, health and environment considerations that come with the use of bottles:

Nearly half of the brands claiming to be selling pristine, purified, natural, healthy water sell nothing more than tap water, sometimes treated additionally, at a hundreds of times higher cost per gallon. While tap municipal tap water is regularly tested by Environmental Protection Agency and cover its standards, bottled water is not as these institutes have no authority over private water distribution. Around 90 % of the used water bottles are thrown into regular trash bins at the expense of greater costs for the environment. The material (oil derived Polyethylene Therephthalate, a.k.a. PET), used to make a water bottle, wastes up nearly 3 times more water to make than will ever go into the bottle! PET production and the truck delivery of bottled water end up in air emissions that poison the air as well as adding to the overall cost because of the fuel used.

As you can see it really is a matter of accessibility and saving time, versus environmental care and awareness. With the increasing popularity of glass-made water bottles some of the issues are being resolved. Although heavier than plastic ones, they are 100 % safe and cost much less to produce. In the end, whether or not to use a 5 gallon water dispenser is a personal choice to each one of us and something that would continue to create debates in the future.

Why a Pur Plus Water Filter Pitcher Beats the Competition

!±8± Why a Pur Plus Water Filter Pitcher Beats the Competition

The Pur Plus Water Filter Pitcher is one easy way to get better water for cheap. Most bottled water is really just filtered tap water anyway. Why not use a filter and make your own and save the waste of hauling bottled water? To say nothing of saving all the land fill space filled with water bottles. Here's how Pur water filters make sense.

These filters are good for about 40 gallons of water. So using the filters is inexpensive compared to bottled water. You'll quickly notice that Pur filters are much like Brita water filters. The designs are similar and so are the costs. Here's a difference...

Pur filters are certified to reduce cryptosporidium and giardia. These are parasites found in drinking water sometimes. The Pur gets them, the Brita isn't certified to remove these. Maybe your water has these parasites in it. Maybe it doesn't, but the Pur gets them if they're there.

Pur filters contain activated carbon to reduce chlorine and make better tasting water. You'll notice that many types of filter systems do contain carbon elements to improve taste. The other part of the filter is a resin section that reduces lead and copper which are both health hazards. Like the Brita, these filters do leave in the fluorine.

The Pur Plus Water Filter Pitcher produces good tasting water while reducing harmful minerals and chemicals. They are certified to reduce cryptosporidium and giardia parasites too, which the Brita is not certified to do. Beat bottled water and eliminate a lot of waste with your own water filters.
